Papers, 1931-1993.

This collection primarily concerns the service between 1943 and 1945 of Floyd Woodrow Cardwell (of Richmond, Va.) in the United States Navy's 92nd Construction Battalion (Seabees), in which Cardwell rose to the rank of painter third class. The unit, which had trained for a period at Camp Peary, Va., was stationed for a time on Tinian Island in the Northern Marianas, where a major South Pacific air base and Marine Corps facility were constructed by the Seabees. The papers include service records (U.S. Selective Service identification cards, service registration cards, other identification [including dog tags], rating description, memoranda, and discharge papers and certificate); a published log book of the 92nd U.S.N. Construction Battalion (printed [1944], with illustrations); scattered copies of the "92nd Island X Press" battalion newsletter, 1944-1945; photographs of Cardwell and Navy buddies in service, as well as images of activities and the encampment of the 92nd C.B.; v-mail sent by Cardwell; and memoranda concerning the 92nd C.B. Collection also includes personal papers of Floyd W. Cardwell, including an identification card as an employee of the Richmond Cedar Works in 1934 and records concerning service with the Virginia Department of Corrections; photographs of members of the Cardwell and Hayes families (including Floyd Woodrow Cardwell); records concerning Cardwell's membership in the Richmond ACCA Temple of the Shriners; and genealogical records (photocopies) of the Cardwell, Hayes, and Marks families of Virginia.

Floyd Woodrow Cardwell was born in Newport News, Va., in November 1912, the son of Franklin Henry Cardwell and Olive (Nichols) Cardwell. He attended school in Newport News and Richmond, where the family moved in the 1920s, and was living in Richmond when he joined the United States Navy in 1943.
